Vazquez: Appearances

I think that Vasquez wanted people to believe that Brian and Mickey were gay men because she wanted people to think that this was a problem that only occurred in the gay community. Vazquez believes that by making people believe that the problem only exists in the gay community it will make people feel as though it does not impact there own lives. She finally discloses that these men are straight in order to make people realize that by simply dressing or dancing in a 'gay way' regardless of whether or not you are gay can get you beaten or attacked at any moment of the day. I think that by telling people that antigay crimes impact even heterosexual men and women it makes more people realize the seriousness of the crimes because they feel as though they can be personally affected by the crimes. I think that it is important to address this issue because there is a major problem when people who are gay are being attacked and there is a major problem when people who are not gay are getting attacked simply because they act gay.
